Daily Maintenance Tips:

The three most important tasks that can be done on a daily basis to keep your stone looking new and extending the time before restoration is required are:  Dust mop, dust mop & dust mop.  The most destructive material to most stone is sand, dirt and miscellaneous grit.  If these substances could be eliminate, maintenance of the stone would be almost non-existent.  A stone floor can never be dust mopped too often.  Use a clean, non-treated, dry dust mop at least two to three times per day in high traffic areas and less often in low traffic areas.

Cleaning:

All natural polished and unpolished stone should be cleaned daily in high traffic areas and less often in low traffic areas.  A clean rayon or cotton string mop should be used with cold to warm water with the addition of a quality neutral cleaner.

Do Not:

  • Do not use vinegar as a cleaner
  • Do not use cleaners containing acid, i.e. bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners and tub and tile cleaners
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners such as Soft Scrub

Do:

  • Do dust mop floor frequently
  • Do clean floor with a stone soap
  • Do pick up spills immediately
  • Do call a professional restoration company if you experience any problems

Restoration:

Periodically your stone floors or counter tops will need to be restored.  This is a task that requires a professional.  How often restoration will be required is difficult to determine.  Generally if all the above precautions are followed restoration may only be needed as little as once every few years.
